2) What time should I plan on getting to the walk by?
The 5 km begins at 10:00 am and the 3 km begins at 10:15 am. We will be opening the event with a welcome and warm-up at 9:45 am—make sure those muscles are limber before beginning your walk.
If you need to drop off your pledge money or pick up your registration package, make sure to leave yourself a little extra time. The pledge drop-off and package pick-up table will be open at 9:00 am.
3) I don't have a car. How can I get there?
Buses run east and west along West 4th Ave. Hop off the bus near Wallace St and you're basically at Jericho Park East. Look for the balloons.
4) What is the parking like in the area?
Street parking is available on West 4th and surrounding streets. Pay parking ($1/hr) is available at Jericho Beach.
5) Can my five-year-old bring his bike?
Because the path will be full of walkers, we would prefer that families leave bicycles, tricycles, skateboards, rollerblades, and other fun manual transportation with wheels at home. Strollers and wheelchairs are welcome.
6) How long will it take us to walk 5 km?
It takes the average walker approximately an hour to walk 5 km. Of course, most parents will know that they will need to double that time if they are bringing small children. Plan on two hours and if you finish early, there will be plenty of fun children's activities to keep your little ones occupied until the prize draws.
7) Can I drop my pledges off the day of the walk?
Because of the timing of the prize draws, it would help us out tremendously if you could drop your pledges off in advance between Tue, May 22 - Thur, May 24 9:00 am and 7:30 pm at the Family Services of Greater Vancouver office at 1616 West 7th Ave (7th and Fir).
If you are unable to drop them off in advance, we will accept them on walk day, but they must be received no later than 9:30 am to be eligible for the prize draws.
8) How will I know if my friends or family make a pledge to me online?
You will receive an e-mail notification, advising you of who made the donation and for how much, so that you can follow-up with your own thank-you. All pledges collected online in your name, will be added to your final pledge total.
9) How do my friends and family pledge my walk online?
Tell your friends and family to visit www.walkforachild.com and click on the "Pledge a Participant" link. Then, they just need to enter your last name or e-mail address and follow the step-by-step instructions.
10) Where does the money I raise go?
All of the funds collected from your entry fee and the pledge donations go to support Family Services of Greater Vancouver's children's programs.
Our work with children includes: counselling for children who live in violent homes; therapy for children and youth who are victims of sexual abuse; violence prevention programs to assist children in developing healthy relationship and anger management skills; and help for at-risk and street-involved youth. You CAN help us prevent violence against children. We CAN make a difference, one step at a time—because prevention is possible.
THANK YOU for supporting Walk for a Child! We look forward to seeing you on May 27.
