Gateway Alternate Education Program

Providing support to Vancouver's homeless youth and youth at-risk

The Gateway Alternate Education program is a joint program with the Vancouver School Board (VSB). It is a day school program for out-of-school youth (many of whom are homeless or living in at-risk situations) between the ages of 13 - 18. Grades 8 through 12 courses are offered, leading to a dogwood diploma. Students work at their own pace.  Whenever possible, youth are encouraged to return to an alternate school or high school within the VSB system.

Program format:

Gateway offers two sessions daily: a morning and an afternoon session. Students are expected to commit to their scheduled session, to attend regularly, and to work towards attaining academic and personal goals.

In addition to the standard curriculum of english, math, social studies, science, phys/ed, and art, the program offers comprehensive lifeskills training in the areas of cooking and nutrition, health and well-being; financial and personal planning, sewing, job-readiness, hand tool competency, and much more.

Program Hours:
8:00 am – 4:00 pm
