Caring Neighbours Program receives $10,000 donation

A New Westminster resident, Jennifer Thompson, has very generously donated $10,000 to Family Services’ Caring Neighbours Program in New Westminster. The gift will enable the program to help all of the nearly 200 New West families who asked for support in 2015.

“I have supported this program in the past through the contribution of baskets to other families, but this year I heard about the overwhelming needs at the Caring Neighbours program and wanted to be a larger part of it. I appreciate the opportunity to give so many local families a brighter Christmas, and hope that others will come forward to help Family Services as well,” Ms Thompson explained.

Caring Neighbours helps New West families in need at Christmas by providing gifts and groceries, so these families can enjoy the joy and warmth of the season. Donors are matched with a family and provided with information such as wishlists and clothing sizes. The donor then purchases the items and personally delivers them to the family. Donors can also provide funds, as Ms. Thompson has done, and our volunteers do the rest.

Patricia Steiner, who coordinates the Caring Neighbour program for Family Services of Greater Vancouver, says the program helps the community in New Westminster on many levels. “The families that get the donations get a big boost, but I also see that donors feel happy that they personally are making a difference. Plus the program also enables us to connect isolated families to other services they need. It’s a big win-win-win, so I really want to thank Jennifer and everyone else who makes the Caring Neighbours program possible!”

While the Caring Neighbours program is now funded for 2015, Family Services is still looking for donations of gift cards so they can buy protein, or donations of protein they can freeze, new socks and men’s large-sized underwear, or donations of funds to buy these items for another Family Services program that helps homeless youth. Donations can be dropped off at any Family Services location (see http://www.fsgv.ca/contact for details.)
